NY: Most Long Islanders with public health insurance renew coverage

Nearly three quarters of Long Islanders met a June deadline to renew public health insurance policies such as Medicaid, avoiding a potential lapse in coverage as officials look to unwind a pandemic-era continuous enrollment policy.

Seventy percent of Medicaid and Essential Plan enrollees on Long Island and 75% of Child Health Plus police holders renewed their coverage by June 30, according to data released Tuesday by the New York State Department of Health. Statewide, 72% of residents in the three plans renewed their coverage on time. Officials expect the rate to go up.

Newburyport closes all beaches on Plum Island to swimming

Health officials in Newburyport have closed all beaches on Plum Island for swimming due to elevated levels of bacteria in the water.

The Massachusetts Department of Public Health informed the city of the elevated levels on Friday and follow-up tests on Monday showed that bacteria levels still exceeded the state’s allowable limit, according to city officials.

The updated closure now includes Plum Island Point Beach and the beach accessed through the pathway at 55th Street.

Signage has been placed at the entrances and parking lots of the public beach. The public may visit the beach as long as they stay

Report highlights high cost of housing and food; lower-income people are forced to make difficult choices

Healthy food is becoming increasingly out of reach for low-income families on Vancouver Island, a new report says.

Grocery costs for a family of four on a nutritious diet costs $1,366 on average per month in the Island Health region, a BC Center for Disease Control report says.

Those in the North Island health region, which includes the Sunshine Coast, were found to pay $1,370 on average, while families in Central Vancouver Island and South Vancouver Island paid an average of $1,343 and $1,386
