On February 15, just weeks before the opening of the 14th National People’s Congress (NPC) legislative session in Beijing, thousands of Chinese retirees in the city of Wuhan and Dalian held large demonstrations against proposed reforms to the public health insurance system. These followed an initial demonstration on February 8 in Wuhan, which was largely peaceful: demonstrators shouted slogans, the β€œThe Internationale,” and promised that they would return a week later if Wuhan authorities did not address their concerns about the reforms, which many retired Workers’ fear will result in steep cuts to their medical benefits.
