Newburyport closes all beaches on Plum Island to swimming

Health officials in Newburyport have closed all beaches on Plum Island for swimming due to elevated levels of bacteria in the water.

The Massachusetts Department of Public Health informed the city of the elevated levels on Friday and follow-up tests on Monday showed that bacteria levels still exceeded the state’s allowable limit, according to city officials.

The updated closure now includes Plum Island Point Beach and the beach accessed through the pathway at 55th Street.

Signage has been placed at the entrances and parking lots of the public beach. The public may visit the beach as long as they stay

Black medical students seek to improve health care access

For a second year, the University of Alberta’s Black Medical Students’ Association (BMSA) hosted an open health fair in an attempt to address what it says are issues with access and representation in health care for members of Edmonton’s Black community.

BMSA president Sahra Kaahiye said the fair is also designed for newcomers, immigrants and low-income individuals who often struggle to access health care.

Study points to better care for babies born to opioid users

Babies born to opioid users have shorter hospital stays and need less medication when their care emphasized parental involvement, skin-to-skin contact and a quiet environment, researchers reported Sunday.

Newborns were ready to go home about a week earlier compared to those getting standard care. Fewer received opioid medications to reduce withdrawal symptoms such as tremors and hard-to-soothe crying, about 20% compared to 52% of the standard-care babies.

Babies born to opioid users, including mothers in treatment with medications such as methadone, can develop withdrawal symptoms after exposure in the womb.

UK health minister says will not negotiate on pay with nurses’ union

LONDON (Reuters) -Britain’s health minister, Steve Barclay, said on Sunday that the government would not negotiate on pay with the nurses’ union, as the threat of further strike looms.

The government’s offer, which includes a one-off payment equivalent to 2% of salaries in the 2022/23 financial year and a 5% pay rise for 2023/24, was rejected by members of the Royal College of Nursing in April.

When asked by Sky News whether the government would resume talks with the union, Barclay said “Not on the amount of pay.”

The union is already balloting its 300,000 members on further strike action
