Loneliness is a public health epidemic in the US: surgeon general

Widespread loneliness in the US poses health risks as deadly as smoking up to 15 cigarettes daily, costing the health industry billions of dollars annually, the US surgeon general said Tuesday in declaring the latest public health epidemic.

About half of US adults say they’ve experienced loneliness, Dr. Vivek Murthy said in an 81-page report from his office.

“We now know that loneliness is a common feeling that many people experience. It’s like hunger or thirst. It’s a feeling the body sends us when something we need for survival is missing,” Murthy told The Associated Press in an

The World Health Organization on Friday declared COVID-19 over as a global health emergency, marking a historic end to devastating chapter of the pandemic that claimed more than 7 million lives worldwide.

The WHO declared a public health emergency of international concern on Jan. 30, 2020, when only 100 cases were reported and the virus had no official name, said WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus during a news conference Friday.

Hodge School of Pharmacy, with the help of the Texas Panhandle Poison Center (TPPC) and in partnership with the Amarillo Police Department (APD), is offering local residents the opportunity to properly dispose of all expired, unwanted or unnecessary medications at the Medication Cleanout. The event will be held from 10 am to 2 pm Saturday at the TTUHC Jerry H. Hodge School of Pharmacy, located at 1400 South Coulter.

The Medication Cleanout employs a drive-thru, drop-off format, which allows residents to conveniently dispose of their medications without leaving their cars.

A freight train carrying hazardous materials derailed in western Arizona, near the state’s border with California and Nevada, on Wednesday evening, an official said.

The train derailed near the town of Topock, Anita Mortensen, a spokeswoman for the Mohave County Sheriff’s Office said, adding that she was not aware of any spills or leaks.

The average life expectancy for Americans is shortened by over seven months [in 2021]according to new data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
