For most of last year, Fresno-based St. Agnes Medical Center looked like a white knight poised to rescue the smaller Madera Community Hospital from financial ruin.

New HIV case linked to 'vampire facial' at shuttered New Mexico spa

NEW MEXICO — A new HIV case has been linked to a “vampire facial” at an Albuquerque spa that closed in 2018, the New Mexico Department of Health said this week.

The only HIV risk that the 2023 patient reported was a “vampire facial” at the VIP Beauty Salon and Spa in 2018. Two cases of HIV were previously linked to injection-related procedures at the spa in 2019, the department said.

Black medical students seek to improve health care access

For a second year, the University of Alberta’s Black Medical Students’ Association (BMSA) hosted an open health fair in an attempt to address what it says are issues with access and representation in health care for members of Edmonton’s Black community.

BMSA president Sahra Kaahiye said the fair is also designed for newcomers, immigrants and low-income individuals who often struggle to access health care.
