Today, the Biden Administration released the President’s FY 2024 budget. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) budget request for FY 2024 includes $11.581 billion in discretionary budget authority, Prevention and Public Health Fund (PPHF), and PHS Evaluation Funds. This request is $2.397 billion above the FY 2023 Enacted level and will enable the Agency to continue building our country’s public health infrastructure so we are prepared to respond to any public health threat.

“CDC is committed to protecting the health of the American people today and safeguarding against public health threats of the future. CDC’s FY 2024 President’s Budget request aligns with the agency’s vision to revitalize the nation’s public health infrastructure; strengthen our ability to detect and respond to pandemic threats; and bolster the core capabilities of the nation’s entire public health system,” said CDC Director Rochelle P. Walensky, MD, MPH.

Specifically, the budget request includes funding to:

• Advance Public Health’s Core Capabilities and Cross-cutting Support: CDC will continue to build on investments and lessons learned from COVID-19 and other public health emergencies, strengthening the Nation’s scientific expertise, modernizing the way we collect, analyze, share, and ultimately forecast epidemics, and advance global health security.
• Preventing and Mitigating the Impact of Infectious Diseases: CDC works 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year to protect Americans from health, safety and security threats, both foreign and domestic. Whether diseases start at home or abroad, are chronic or acute, curable or preventable, human error or deliberate attack, CDC fights disease and supports communities and citizens to do the same.
• Preventing Chronic Disease, Promoting Healthy Life and Protecting Against Environmental Hazards: Working at the community level promotes healthy living, helps prevent injury and chronic diseases and brings the greatest health benefits to the greatest number of people in need. It also helps reduce health gaps caused by differences in race and ethnicity, location, social status, income, and other factors that can affect health.
• Prioritizing Mental Health and Preventing Injury and Violence: CDC will invest in programs to promote adolescent mental health in schools, address suicide and reduce injury and violence.
